Riverbank High School Music Director Joey Aguilar reported earlier this month that both his special percussion unit and the RHS Winter Guard flag team did well in their competition at Central Valley High School on Saturday, March 7. But he fears that it might have been the last one for this season due to the ongoing school closures in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Winter Guard was in a very competitive class this year, Regional AA. We started off in fourth place this season and had jumped to second place at the last competition, with less than a point (.17) difference from first place,” Aguilar explained. “The Indoor Percussion unit started out in third place this season and jumped to first place in this last event.”

The teams were also supposed to travel to the WGI Portland Regional this month but that show was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.

As of March 12, the local circuit, CVGPC, canceled all remaining shows including championships due to the pandemic concerns.

“This was disappointing to both our Guard and Percussion groups, especially the seniors, because we were close to getting the gold medal placements at the championship show,” admitted Aguilar.

However, all students are facing the same disappointment, with schools closed and all sports, extracurricular events, drama club shows and competitive activities cancelled until further notice.
