Another community volunteer has passed away.

Art Benitez, husband of former Riverbank mayor and council member Sandra Benitez, died Christmas week.

A rosary vigil has been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 7, at the Riverbank Memorial Chapel at 6 p.m. The chapel is at 3131 Santa Fe Street in downtown.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, 2827 Topeka Street.

Benitez was very active in Riverbank as a volunteer, helping in many areas of activity, but most especially with local youngsters.

He was a youth baseball coach for several years. He often volunteered to help local vendors at Farmers Market through the years and he has helped at the Cheese and Wine Expo in downtown and the Haunted Hayride in Jacob Myers Park.

Perhaps his biggest impact could have been his work as an aide at Cardozo Middle School. Word of his death spread quickly on social media last week among his former students.
