School District Restores Counselors

Riverbank Unified School District trustees have restored the counseling positions in the district so there is now one fulltime counselor and one part-time counselor serving Riverbank High and Adelante Continuation High schools.

From a full contingent of three counselors at RHS a few years ago, the number of positions had dropped to one before Denny Carl retired when the district proposed eliminating them altogether for lack of funds.

Trustees decided otherwise at the Aug. 2 board meeting after a teacher at Adelante School addressed the board on the importance of having counselors, especially at his school.

Carl Hughes noted that counselors deal not only with academic issues and getting students on track for college but they also try to help students with their social, personal and family problems.

There is also hope the district may find funding to restore the librarians at the elementary schools. For the moment, only Riverbank High has retained a librarian clerk. While counselors are certificated, the librarian clerk position is classified. Pending negotiations with employee unions, the district may again be able to staff the elementary school libraries, said a district official.
