School Trustees Approve Mello Roos Taxes

Riverbank Unified School District trustees have approved collection of Mello Roos taxes for the 2008-2009 fiscal year in the Community Facilities District (CFD) No. 1.

Earlier this year, there were some public protests from the residents involved and legal arguments on these levies that now appear to have been settled.

The school district draws special taxes from 245 developed residential parcels within Elmwood Estates, which was the original CFD formed on the east side of town, plus the later annexed areas of Churchill Downs, Belmont Park and Castleberg Estates.

The annual tax per parcel is $915 and projected to bring in about $215,000 this financial year for an increase of $16,400 from the previous year's levy.

The CFD was formed to provide part of the funding for acquisition of an elementary school site, construction of a school and other facilities. The district currently uses the revenues to provide temporary housing for students in the taxed district.

In other action items at the school board's Aug. 19 meeting:

Trustees authorized the purchase of 12 relocatable classrooms from the State of California at $4,000 each instead of continuing to lease them for the same sum each year.
