The annual Shop with a Cop effort coordinated through Riverbank Police Services in cooperation with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is on the schedule later this month.
An effort designed to help local youngsters in need, the shopping spree date is Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.
“We will be helping 17 families with 30 children this year,” said Riverbank Police Services Sgt. David Hickman. “There will be an increased deputy presence in Riverbank near the Crossroads Shopping Center.”
Deputies and Community Service Officers are paired with kids for the shopping spree, with the youngsters typically able to shop for some clothing essentials, accessories and often new winter outerwear.
Money is raised through a variety of ways throughout the year for Shop with a Cop and among the most recent efforts was a special Comedy Night fundraiser hosted at 108 Sports Lounge in Riverbank.
“Thanks to their efforts and the generosity of everyone who attended,” sheriff’s department officials noted in a Facebook post, “they raised $2,686. This donation will help us provide essential items to children in need and support local families during the holiday season.”
Hickman added that with the event fast approaching, the fundraising for this year’s effort is complete.
“People can always donate,” Hickman said. “Any donations after fundraising roll over to the next year.”
In addition to the annual Shop with a Cop, Riverbank’s Christmas Celebration is also on the calendar, set for the downtown area on Saturday, Dec. 13. Featured will be a craft fair from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., the holiday parade beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a tree lighting in Plaza del Rio Park and the chance to visit with Santa and have a holiday photo taken with him.
