Modesto gas prices have fallen 1.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.93/gallon on May 20, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 201 stations. Gas prices in Modesto are 3.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago, yet stand 40.3 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto is priced at $3.67/gallon while the most expensive is $4.29, a difference of 62.0 cents per gallon. The lowest price in the state is $3.29 while the highest is $5.87, a difference of $2.58/gallon. The cheapest price in the entire country as of May 20 stands at $1.80/gallon while the most expensive is $5.87, a difference of $4.07/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 2.1 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.84. The national average is down 0.6 cents per gallon from a month ago, yet stands 8.1 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $3.95/gallon, down 2.6 cents per gallon from last week’s $3.97; Oakland - $4.09, down 2.1 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.11; and San Jose - $4.07/gallon, down 4.3 cents from last week’s $4.12.

“The national average price of gasoline has continued its slow retreat in a majority of states in the last week,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “We continue to believe that additional slow relief will trickle to pumps in the next week as more refiners get back into the game and boost production. California, the nation’s priciest state for gasoline, will likely see average prices fall back under the $4 per gallon mark for the first time in a month, joined by major areas across the state. I expect the bulk of states to see lower gas prices continue just in time for Memorial Day while some, inevitably, will see increases.”
