Research Charts New Territory

Stanislaus State Professor of Criminal Justice Huan Gao is bringing new attention to an understudied issue: youth gang activity in California’s Central Valley. With assistance from criminal justice students, Gao completed research on the topic and the study resulted in her new book, “Youth Involvement in Street Gangs in California’s Central Valley,” (Routledge) released on Nov. 13. The 234-page book is the first study to comprehensively examine youth gang involvement in rural areas. The book’s release coincided with the American Society of Criminology’s annual conference in San Francisco.

 

A Legacy Of Leadership

Campus leaders and colleagues gathered with former College of Business Administration Dean and Professor Emeritus Amin Elmallah on Nov. 5 during a ceremony naming the college’s Student Success Center in his honor.

 

Classroom Naming

Stanislaus State recently honored the legacy of the late Professor Emeritus Fred Hilpert by dedicating a classroom in his name. Family members, former colleagues and friends of Hilpert gathered in Demergasso-Bava Hall on Nov. 7 for a dedication ceremony for the Dr. Fred P. Hilpert, Jr. Classroom.

 

Women’s Soccer Honors

Five Stan State Warriors were named to the 2024 All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Soccer Team. Aliah Avila was named the CCAA Midfielder of the Year and was a First Team All-CCAA selection. Shauna Johnston, Kaley Miller, Jocelin Roa and Makeila Yancey were also named to the All-CCAA Team.

 

75th Birthday Salute

Stanislaus State Composer and Professor/Coordinator of Music Theory and Composition Deborah Kavasch assembled a group of friends and colleagues for a recent concert in Snider Music Recital Hall. The concert featured 10 original compositions by Kavasch that were performed at a celebration of her birthday.
