It was a unique way to celebrate the first day of 2026, as people suited up for a quick dip – or to swim a few laps – at the Riverbank Community Pool on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 1. Hosted by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, officials said this was the second year for the ‘plunge’ and it was offered from noon to 2 p.m., with brisk temperatures but also a little sun visible through the clouds. About 150 actually plunged in, nearly double the attendance from last year, while others were there to cheer them on. There were medals for all participants, Dutch Bros. staff poured free hot chocolate and the city provided chicken noodle soup once participants emerged from the pool.
