Top Scholars Tapped As Graduation Speakers

The Riverbank High students chosen to address the gathering at Thursday's graduation ceremony, May 21, are top scholars of the school and excel in a variety of subjects.

The chosen speakers are Steve Caton, Alex Contreras and Diana Olaco as valedictorians, Christian Nunez as salutatorian and Vanessa Lopez as senior class president.

Holding a grade point average of 4.2 throughout all four years, Caton is headed to the University of California at Los Angeles to study electrical engineering. At Riverbank High, he also played tennis and ran cross-country, belonged to the California Scholarship Federation and together with Contreras started the math club.

Contreras, who also has a GPA well over 4.0, is also into mathematics and engineering and plans on attending the University of the Pacific to study mechanical engineering.

Nunez, too, is a CSF member, mathematician and engineer bound for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. At Riverbank High, he took part in basketball, track, and cross country and was in the drama club taking a lead role in 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' this last season.

Olaco has served as the chief executive officer of the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps this year and is headed for Stanislaus State in Turlock with plans to start a career as a registered nurse.

Lopez, the senior class president, will also attend Stanislaus State to major in business. During her years at RHS, she has played a variety of sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball and cross country, participated in color guard, and belonged to the Leadership and Interact clubs.

About 135 seniors are due to graduate, starting the May 21 ceremony at 7:30 p.m. in the new Ray Fauria Gymnasium.
