With March observed as Women’s History Month, local State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil is looking for women who have made a difference.

“I have the honor of recognizing an exceptional woman in the community to join me in the “Woman of the Year” Senate Floor Ceremony on Monday, March 16,” Alvarado-Gil said of the event planned at the Capitol in Sacramento. “I am soliciting nominations directly from leaders in the community to honor a woman that is a veteran, whose service, advocacy, or support for military personnel and veterans has significantly strengthened the community.”

The deadline for nominations has been extended through Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.

Alvarado-Gil represents State Senate District 4, which includes both Oakdale and Riverbank in Stanislaus County. The district also covers all or part of Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Nevada, Placer, and Tuolumne counties in addition to Stanislaus.

“Please take a moment to identify a member of your community to nominate for this prestigious award,” Alvarado-Gil said. “In addition, I will be honoring women in their local community with honorary certificates as well. I encourage you to include anyone you believe should be celebrated, whether they are a volunteer, business leader, elected official, or community superstar.”

For the Woman of the Year program, nominees must be a female veteran, age 18 or older, and live in Senate District 4. A resumé, biography, or list of accomplishments must be submitted, said Alvarado-Gil, along with a Letter of Recommendation from a local elected official answering the following prompt: Please describe how this woman, a veteran, has influenced your community and helped create a better place for all through her service, advocacy, or support for military personnel and veterans.
