Dawn's Column Nearly A Year

A year ago at this time I was in the throes of pulling together final details for my wedding. My husband and I became engaged just before the holidays, which didn't leave much time for actual wedding plans until after the first of the year, resulting in a shorter planning schedule than I had dreamed about.

This is my especially busy time of year for work and I remember that last year I was juggling many work commitments and bridal appointments - and trying very hard to keep my sanity. It was a really chaotic time.

My husband was just commenting that I still seem as busy as I was last year but don't have the wedding. That's because I am just as busy, but thankfully don't have the wedding. We lived in different towns then and he wasn't around to see what life was like for me day in and day out. Now, he has slightly better insight into how busy I actually was last year and why I was about to lose my mind.

The whole engaged and married thing was a big adjustment for me. In less than a year's time, my guy went from being my longtime significant other, to my few-months fiancé, to my husband. He and I have now been married longer than we were engaged.

In May of last year, I was packing for my honeymoon as well as packing up all my belongings, preparing to move into my husband's home. In order to make room for me, closet organization systems were required and we embarked on the do-it-yourself project from hell.

We still got married.

In summary, I had my busy season for work, wedding planning, and moving all going on at the same time.

Each of these requires serious time commitments. I'm here to tell you that it's not wise to mix more than two of these things at once; it's probably best to do only one at a time.

I learned my lesson.

I recall that I didn't take any time off until three days before the wedding. But I didn't have much of a choice, otherwise I'd have taken at least a week. Those days were a blur. Beauty salons, final fittings for me and my bridesmaids, a bridal party party, wedding rehearsal and dinner, and trying to find a guest book pen that wasn't too 'foofy' to replace the one that was backordered filled the final countdown.

I didn't even take time off to move. I moved mostly in pieces, a few boxes here and there.

My husband and I wisely left the morning following the wedding for our honeymoon. It was fabulous but we eventually had to come home to the many boxes of my belongings crowding our abode. Then the wedding gifts came to reside with us. Unfortunately there are still a few boxes I have to rummage through to find what I need. Too busy right now to deal with more unpacking.

I'm happy to say we're going to steal away for some fun, sun and relaxation for our first anniversary. We'd have liked to return to the tropical paradise where we spent our honeymoon but our schedules didn't allow for that this year.

I've been looking back on all this and asking myself where the time went. It sounds bizarre to me that we're just a month away from having our one-year anniversary. Why do the years go by faster as you get older? These are great times for us and the time is whizzing past. It seems so unfair that we can't just merge into the slow lane of life's highway sometimes. We'll just have to do our best to take in the scenery and enjoy the ride.
