MACHO MADNESS Calling All Grandparents

It's not like I didn't have months to prepare for this.

You would think I would have thought of something by now.

My quandary came in the form of a question, one I should have been expecting.

In previous columns I've mentioned my pending status as a new grandfather. It's been a pretty neat experience, watching my daughter and son-in-law go through her pregnancy and share in their excitement as her due date drew closer.

Three weeks ago I blew off covering the hospital bond election, a city council meeting, and various other assignments when Rachel went into labor at 3 a.m. on a Wednesday morning.

With our son Kevin home from school, he was able to accompany Donnelle and I to Washington State. We flew out of Sacramento, after Rachel told us everything was going well.

I don't believe in fate or karma, but sometimes you have to wonder how it is that you happen to catch the sweet spot on the ball when you most need it.

After landing in Portland, switching planes, landing in Spokane, renting a car, driving to the hospital, and finding our daughter's birthing room, we walked in just about 15 minutes after she gave birth to Madeline.

Our timing couldn't have been better, especially since Madeline had ingested some fluid and needed some extra care, causing Danny and Rachel to worry a bit.

A few minutes later, Rachel was able to hold her daughter for the first time. Danny was beaming, and we welcomed Madeline Sienna Foret to the family.

And that's when the question came.

"How does it feel, Grandpa?"

Grandpa?
