I have a confession to make: I am deeply, irrationally, completely obsessed with pumpkin pie.
This shouldn’t be surprising during November, when pumpkin everything infiltrates every corner of our lives. But here’s the thing that makes my obsession genuinely baffling—by all rights, I should hate pumpkin pie. I should run screaming from it.
I’m a picky eater. I have sensory issues. The smooth, custard-like consistency of pumpkin pie is exactly the kind of texture that typically sends me running for the hills. On paper, pumpkin pie and I should be mortal enemies.
And yet.
Every November, I find myself eyeing those orange-filled crusts at the grocery store like a hawk circling its prey. I can’t explain where this love came from. I don’t remember a childhood Thanksgiving where pumpkin pie changed my life. There’s no origin story, no emotional connection to a beloved grandmother’s secret recipe. It’s just ... there. This inexplicable adoration for something I have no business loving.
Which is precisely why I’ve instituted a strict rule: pumpkin pie is a November-only affair. Because if I allowed myself year-round access, the only shape I’d be getting into this season is round. Self-preservation demands boundaries, even with the things we love most.
But during these precious few weeks? I indulge shamelessly. A huge dollop of whipped cream—or Cool Whip, I’m not picky about that—and I savor every single bite. Every. Single. One.
So, here’s my question for you: Do you have a holiday food fixation? Something that makes absolutely no sense but has you in its delicious grip every year? Please tell me I’m not alone in this seasonal madness. Share your own inexplicable holiday food obsession—I need to know there are others out there who understand.
And maybe, I’ll pick up something new to fixate on.
Just don’t suggest sweet potato pie.
Again, for reasons that make little sense because it’s similar to pumpkin in texture, it made me gag.
My picky palate makes about as much sense as I do.
Happy Turkey Day (in advance!)
