All Stars win one, lose two

Riverbank Minor All Stars ballplayers were victorious in their first game, but lost two more in the Waterford Tournament played July 8-10.

Riverbank's Youth Baseball & Softball Association representatives defeated Oakdale, 14-13, on the Thursday, then lost to Waterford, 10-4, and to Ceres, 15-4, on subsequent days.

"We were in the lead. But Oakdale started coming back. Our pitching about lost us the game. So we brought back our starter, and that was good enough," said Riverbank's coach Terry Codde of the hard-fought game against Oakdale.

Nick Valadez was Riverbank's starting pitcher. He was helped by Gabe Flores and John Vetter.

"We didn't make that many hits, but got a lot of walks. Their pitcher was wild," Codde added.

Jake Dinias, however, hit a triple for Riverbank, and Valadez clobbered a loose pitch for a solid double.

Riverbank was competing against nine other Minor League teams. Ceres was clearly in a class of its own -its players have been together five years- and won the tournament.

This tournament concluded the season for the Riverbank All Stars.
