The Senior Spotlight continues this week, shining for the lucky 13th time since the COVID epidemic forced school and sports closures. This time the focus is on RHS 2020 grad Easton Gutierrez, a utility player in two sports in recent years on Bruin teams.

Fall Football

Over the sports and seasons of his high school career, Gutierrez has worn several jersey numbers, but on the Bruin gridiron this year, he carried the number 12. In addition, he served in several positions, both on offense and on defense.

At times, he could play quarterback, either under the center or taking a deep snap. In addition, he played running back and wide receiver, depending on the Bruins’ configuration needs. On defense, he’s filled in as a corner back, linebacker or safety. And sometimes he was called upon to receive the kickoff.

Spring Baseball

Also a utility player on the hardball diamond, Gutierrez filled a variety of roles on Riverbank’s varsity baseball team.

Since the spring shutdown this year stopped all but a handful of home baseball games, we were able to look back at 2019 varsity action, where Gutierrez played in left field, and at shortstop, as well as handling the balls and strikes behind the plate when needed, serving as catcher.

Next up in the spotlight, Marisol Garcia, softball pitcher and girls golfer.

The 2020 grad likely would have served in the same positions this year had the spring season not been cancelled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ric McGinnis/The News
