The Bruin baseball team, ranked number five among small schools and holding second place in the Trans Valley League as of Tuesday, upheld its reputation during spring vacation.
Playing in a three-day tournament at Washington High School in Fremont, Riverbank varsity baseball players defeated Branham High School of San Jose, 6-2, lost to their Division I host, 6-1, and beat Andrew Hill High School of San Jose, 14-4.
Drew Villalabos pitched the complete game Monday against Branham, said Riverbank coach Mike Carrigg. At bat, Adan Mercado collected a double and a triple. Chris Bigelow also posted two hits, and Cody Avey scored two RBIs.
In Tuesday's matchup, Washington led 3-1 until the sixth inning when Riverbank fell apart. Zac Swanson, on the mound, struck out six batters. Bigelow again collected two hits and Jason Canada also had two hits.
Coming to the final game on Wednesday, the Bruins enjoyed themselves at bat, collecting 14 hits for their 14 runs.
"Everyone in the starting lineup had a hit," said Carrigg. "And we only made two errors during the whole tournament. We're playing good baseball."
Kevin Cole opened the pitching and threw four innings. pulling a groin muscle and being replaced by Canada.
Beginning TVL play again this week, the Bruins faced Escalon on Tuesday. They will take on Ripon Christian on Thursday. Both games are away. The RC game marks the start of the league's second round.
