The Lady Bruins varsity softball squad found a shorter route to the end of their season this year, aided by that COVID-19 virus.
Their last two home games of the already brief 2021 season had to be canceled when it was discovered that some of the players, who also compete on a travel ball team, may have been exposed there, according to school officials.
The games would have occurred during the two week quarantine period, so the games were just called off.
And while softball is a wrap, there are other Season Two sports occurring this spring for the Bruins, with track and field and baseball seeing action this past week with basketball and soccer starting as well.
Track And Field
The RHS co-ed track and field squads hosted their first meet of the season last Wednesday, April 28, against Hughson. Although out manned in many events, there were a few exciting finishes.
This week, the first of two Southern Athletic League meets will be held here on the Riverbank track, Wednesday afternoon, May 5. The second, and final, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19.
Baseball Opening Day
The Bruin varsity baseball team got its start for the year last week, with home and away contests against Hughson on Tuesday, April 27 and Thursday, April 29. Riverbank fell 17-3 on the road, then 14-0 at home.
They were to play at Modesto Christian on May 4, and host Modesto Christian on Thursday, May 6.
Spring Soccer And Basketball
Boy boys and girls roundball was set to begin this week, with the Lady Bruins playing May 5 at Denair, and hosting Waterford on Friday, May 7. On the opposite schedule, the Bruin boys were to host Denair on Wednesday and travel to Waterford Friday.
Bruin boys soccer was to host Denair on May 5, and travel to Waterford on Thursday, while opposite that, Lady Bruin soccer was to go to Denair on Tuesday and host Waterford on May 6.
Since the soccer matches have been scheduled for afternoons this spring, it seems likely they’ll be played on the regular pitch on the RHS campus, next to the varsity baseball field, instead of during where they play in the winter, on the lighted football field, as they have been in recent seasons.
