The Riverbank boys' cross country team fared well at the Half Moon Bay Invitational on Oct. 2, placing second out of 17 full teams.

"It was pretty good," said coach Bruce Edwards. "I figured we'd be between fourth and eighth. The times don't really mean much, since the course was 2.3 miles."

Omar Fernandez finished in fourth place overall for Riverbank out of 157 runners. Isaac Montoya was 11th, and Robbie Searway was 12th.

"They've been right up there, no matter where they compete," Edwards said.

Freshmen Justin Smith (52nd) and Tanner Nabors (70th) also competed, as did Martin Ramos.

In earlier action, Riverbank boys placed first, third and fourth in cross-country to defeat Livingston 25-30 on Wednesday and keep their Trans Valley League record at 3-0.

Fernandez finished first in 16:57. Searway placed third in 17:26, and Montoya was fourth in 17:32.

"It was a flat course through the streets of Livingston. But it started and finished with a lap around the track like an Olympic marathon," Edwards said.

Fernandez caught up with the Livingston leader approximately halfway through the race and outkicked him to take the win.

"Omar had his best time ever," Edwards said. "It was close until the end."

The coach also congratulated his freshmen: Nabors finished seventh in 17:38, and Smith posted a time of 20:06 for 10th place.

"They had tired legs," Edwards said. "I'd been working them hard during the week. But they took off after the leaders. It was inspiring."
