Riverbank High School soccer players opened their season with a 4-3 victory against Orestimba High School in Newman.

Trailing 2-0 on their own field last Friday, the Bruins came back to tie the score, 2-2, in the first half off one goal by Nelson Munguia, and another by Victor Figueroa with an assist from Daniel Vasquez.

"Munguia was left wide open and just chipped it over their goalie's head," said Bruin coach Martin Gonzales.

A few minutes into the second half, Munguia headed in another goal after Ramiro Calderon headed the ball back to his teammates.

"Nelson just jumped over everything to head the ball into the bottom corner of the net,'' said Gonzales.

Orestimba tied the score again with a goal 15 minutes later. Then, Leo Valdez took a pass from Andres Zamora to again find the corner of the net and give the Bruins the win.

"Antonio Vigil and Victor Figueroa were outstanding in defense and saved us many times,'' Gonzales added. "We played like a team, young as we are. We didn't have a single senior on the field."

Riverbank's goalie, Pedro Ruiz, recorded seven saves.

This week, the bruins are really busy. They were scheduled to play a second home game against Waterford Tuesday and an away game against Calaveras on Thursday, Aug. 26. Then, they will compete in the Davis Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Riverbank will play a third home game next Tuesday, Aug. 31, against Summerville. Kick off is at 4:30 p.m.
