Playing to exact scores of 3-1 in each game this week, Riverbank's varsity Bruins saw one go in the win column, while the other was a loss on the soccer field.

The Bruins hosted Hughson on Tuesday, Oct. 5 and won that game, 3-1.

"At halftime, we were up 2-1," said coach Martin Gonzales. "We got two goals from Jesus Yepez and one from Ramiro Calderon in the game."

One goal was assisted, Francisco de los Santos getting credit for the assist.

"They played pretty tough," Gonzales added of visiting Hughson. "They were very physical."

Riverbank goalie Arturo Albor made six saves in goal against the Huskies.

"We had a chance to score a couple more goals, I felt, but we didn't put them in," Gonzales added.

At Livingston for the Thursday game, Riverbank fell short in a 3-1 decision.

"We did not play a good game," Gonzales said simply. "There were times during that game that we looked like we had never played soccer before."

Livingston capitalized on that opportunity, scoring two quick goals against the Bruins that they never got back.

"In the first 20 minutes, they put two goals in on us," explained Gonzales. "We got a goal before halftime so it was 2-1 at the half, we still had a chance."

But a defensive breakdown in the second half gave Livingston the only opportunity it needed and they scored the insurance goal for the win.

"In that second half we really started to battle it out," Gonzales said.

Livingston, however, was granted a penalty kick when one of their players was taken out from behind and they converted.

Scoring the only goal for Riverbank was Raymundo Garnica, with an assist from Yepez.

"Right now we're 4-3 in league and it's a real tight battle because Hilmar lost to Escalon," Gonzales said. "It may come down to Livingston and us for that third playoff spot."

Patterson and Hilmar are leading the league and the Bruins were slated to play at Patterson on Tuesday, after The News went to press. They will host Hilmar on Thursday.
