Suiting up for a pair of basketball games on the road this week, the Riverbank Bruins failed to come home with a victory.

They took on Bret Harte on Tuesday, Dec. 16 and lost by 10, hanging tough against the host Bullfrogs.

The teams were evenly matched through the first half, Riverbank taking a 15-11 lead after one quarter and Bret Harte trimming it to a 26-24 Bruin edge at the half.

But some halftime adjustments by the Bullfrogs proved to do the trick, as they came out strong and outscored the visitors 17-9 in the third to gain the lead, 41-35, after three periods. The teams traded buckets in the fourth, with Bret Harte just a couple of points better, holding off the Bruins in a 67-57 final.

Zach Gonzales had another outstanding night for the Bruins, pouring in 20 points with the help of four 3-pointers. Jose Moreno was also in double figure with 13 and Lucas Pope had five, including one three.

The JV boys were also handled by Bret Harte for a Bullfrog sweep on the night.

Back on the road for a Friday game at Sonora, the varsity boys had a tougher time with the higher division opponent, falling to the Valley Oak League school, 50-27.

Riverbank was held to single digit scoring in each of the four quarters, tallying 6, 4, 8 and 9 points. Sonora countered with double figures in three of four periods, 15, 16, 11 and then 9 points in the fourth.

Leading the Bruin team was Mohammed Ali, who put in 11, three of his baskets coming from beyond the arc.

The JV boys also fell on the road to the host Sonora team.

Both squads, however, will have the chance for some more action as they take part in the Oakdale Tournament starting Saturday, Dec. 27. Additional games will be Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 29 and 30.
