Bruin Boys Track Team Takes TVL Crown

Riverbank boys once again won the Trans Valley League track and field meet, while the Bruin girls placed second at Stanislaus State College on Wednesday, May 11.

"This is the 10th league championship in a row for the boys," said Riverbank coach Ron Hebert.

The Bruin girls team lost to Escalon by only five points, coach Monte Wood noted. "The girls ran well," he said. "I'm proud of them. We just needed more of them."

Boys team scores were Riverbank, 153.5; Escalon, 132; Livingston, 55.5; Hilmar, 55; Hughson, 44; Ripon, 44; and Patterson, 23.

The girls team scores were Escalon, 131.5; Riverbank, 126.5; Hilmar, 120; Patterson, 36; Livingston, 35; Hughson, 24; and Ripon, 19.

Bruin athletes placing first through third were scheduled to compete yesterday in Section trials and will continue tomorrow in finals at Modesto Junior College. Field events start at 2 p.m. and track at 4 p.m.

For the first time, Riverbank and other small schools will be separated from Division I and II and compete against only Division III and IV teams.

Highlights of the League meet for Riverbank included triple wins by freshman runner German Fernandez in the 800 meters, the one- and the two mile events; and both long jump and triple jump wins by Ralphie Stevens.

For the girls, Maritza Garcia broke both the TVL and school records in the 800 meters; Kasey Wool smashed the TVL record in the 300 meter hurdles; and sophomore Kelly Clancey won the 400 meters while running that race only for the second time in competition.

Boys placing for Riverbank by event included:

High jump - Jonelle Colon, third at 5-8. Triple jump - Ralphie Stevens, first at 44-1.5. Long jump - Stevens, first at 21-2.75.

Pole vault - Tony Winstead, first at 12-6. 110 high hurdles - Ben DeYoung, second at 15.63 and Mike Dougherty, third at 16.38.

4x100 relay - Riverbank, second in 45.55.

1600 meters - German Fernandez, first in 4:32.12 and Omar Fernandez, third in 4:47.

300 meter hurdles - DeYoung, first in 42.17 and Dougherty, second in 42.74.

800 meters - German Fernandez, first in 2:01.43 and Ramiro Calderon, third in 2:11.07.

3200 meters - German Fernandez, first in 10:06.53 and Omar Fernandez, third in 10:33.93.

4x40 meter relay - Riverbank, first in 3:38.05.

For the Riverbank girls, first through third places included:

Pole vault - Kasey Wool, first with 10-6 and Kelley Clancey, second with 10-0.

Triple jump - Clancey, second with 32-6.

100 meter hurdles - Wool, first in 16.47. 1600 meters - Garcia , second in 5:12.38 and Bianca Melchor, third in 5:26.94.

400 meter dash - Clancey, first in 1:02.27. 100 meter dash - Wool, second in 13.02. 3200 meters - Melchor, second in 12:05

300 meter hurdles - Wool, first in 47.47. 800 meters - Maritza, first in 2:20.43 and Brettany Harrison, third in 2:32.88.

4x400 meter relay - Riverbank, first in 4:28.59.
