Bruin Girls Play Hard, Despite Three Losses

Playing in the Tracy Tournament during the holidays, the Riverbank varsity girls basketball team lost three games in spite of a sustained effort.

Facing Los Banos on Tuesday, the Bruins lost, 45-35, despite a spirited start and finish to the game.

After opening with a 15-8 first quarter, the Bruins yielded 6-16 in the second period and were defeated, 15-2, in the third quarter before rallying for a 12-6 final period.

Courtney Brock scored 13 points for Riverbank; Monica Cardenas trailed her on points with 8; Janet Moya, with 7; and Nicole Fatone, with 2.

Riverbank hit six baskets out of 17 attempts at the free throw line while their opponents totaled 15 out of an astonishing 25.

In Wednesday's game against Beyer, Riverbank succumbed by 52-39.

Trailing 4-12 in the first quarter and 10-13 for the second, the Riverbank girls managed to force a 13-13 tie for the third period, but were 12-14 for the final period.

Sonia Naranjo was the Bruins top scorer with 15 points. Cardenas posted 9 points; Fatone, Moya and Brock, 4 each; and Vanessa Rodriguez, 2.

This time, Riverbank managed modest six out of 10 buckets from the free throw line. Their opponents, again, came to the foul line a high number of times, 22, but sank only 14 of their throws.

Playing their final game on Thursday, the Bruins lost by 39-29 to Johansen.

Riverbank began well with a 9-4 first quarter and tied the second period, 10-10. For the third quarter, however, the Bruins scored only one point to their opponents 11. They lost the last period, 9-14.

Riverbank's top scorer was Cardenas, with 11 points. Rodriguez posted 10 points; Moya, 5; and Fatone, Naranjo and Brock, 1 each.

At the foul line, the reckoning was six buckets out of 16 tries for Riverbank, and seven out of 13 for Johansen.

The Bruins scored four times from the outside, three of them by Cardenas and the other by Rodriguez.

This week, the girls played Argonaut on Monday before taking on Amador at home on Thursday and facing Ripon Christian away in their league opener, which will take place Saturday, Jan. 8, at 3:30 p.m.
