Bruin Girls Valiant Effort

Serena Palmer booted two goals for Riverbank and Raquel Anguiano another, but the Bruin girls still lost 5-3 to Livingston in Friday's home soccer game.

Palmer scored her first goal in the first half, another in the second half, and nearly made it three with a left-footed kick that the Livingston goalie narrowly blocked.

For Anguiano, it was her first goal in high school soccer when her kick glanced off an opposing player straight into the net.

"They were a very physical team, but we took it to them from the start," said Bruin coach Jim Anderson.

Livingston scored twice in the first half and added three more goals after the midgame break.

It was a different story against Escalon on Wednesday. The Cougars piled up seven goals in the first half and went on to win 9-0 on Riverbank's home turf.

"There were not many bright spots," Anderson admitted. "But thanks to Erica Galvan and Lupe Martinez in goal, we held them to two goals in the second half."

Starting Bruin goalie Erika Fernandez was credited with nine saves, and Martinez with 10.

Anderson said he changed his lineup for the second half, putting his strongest players like Galvan and Sonia Silveira at halfback, along with Andrea Lutge to strengthen the middle.

Courtney Nelson, meanwhile, continued to do good work as fullback, he added.

Today, the Bruins are scheduled to play away against Ripon Christian. On Friday they will face Ripon, also away, then on Wednesday, April 7, they will return home to take on Hilmar.

In facing Hughson and Escalon, the Bruins opened the league with some very tough opponents, Anderson noted, also saying that future games should be more evenly matched.
