Riverbank High School cross-country runner Maritza Garcia has reached a new milestone for Bruin sports by being named to the All North Cal team and receiving a certificate of honorable mention.
Garcia's time of 18:52 for the 5,000 meters at the state meet, and her impressive sixth place showing at the western regionals, were key to her success, said her coach Jeep Oliveira.
She was named All League, All District and now North Cal, and has attracted the attention of universities as far away as Pennsylvania and as large as University of California at Los Angeles.
On Saturday, Garcia opened her track season by winning the Don Osborne Memorial Mile in Oakdale in a time of 5:39. Teammate Bianca Melchor won the 5,000 meters in 21:14.
