Bruin spring squads battling through tough campaigns

It hasn’t been an easy spring for the Riverbank Bruins on the sports scene, as baseball, softball and volleyball have all hit a stretch of losses. Here is a look at recent contests.

BASEBALL

For the varsity baseball team, they fell in a 13-2 decision at home to Linden on March 31 and then were shut out by a 16-0 final on the road against the Lions on Thursday, April 2.

In the March 31 contest, Riverbank scored their two runs in the bottom of the fifth. They had just three hits on the day and committed four errors.

Daniel Garnica was 1-for-1 with an RBI while Austynn Givargiznia was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

At Linden for the April 2 contest, the Bruins were roughed up in the bottom of the first, as the host team put 10 runs on the board and never looked back, eventually taking the 16-0 Mother Lode League victory. Riverbank had just two hits on the day, one each from junior Santos Acuna and senior Xavier Lopez.

They were scheduled to be on the home field for an April 7 game against Bret Harte and travel to face the Bullfrogs on Friday, April 10.

SOFTBALL

A hard fought 6-4 varsity softball loss to Linden on the home field Tuesday, March 31 saw Riverbank help out the visitors by committing five errors on the day. Linden had six runs, seven hits and one error; Riverbank had four runs, eight hits and five errors.

Maya Guzman had a solid outing once again, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Audrey Richey had a hit and drove in a run as well.

At Linden on April 2, the girls fell in a 10-2 decision. They got off to a good start, pushing two runs across the plate in the top of the first. But Linden answered, and then some, with four runs in the bottom of the inning and the Lady Bruins couldn’t get anything going throughout the rest of the contest, taking the loss.

Guzman was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored; senior Faith Keb drove in a run, sophomore Briseida Felix was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The varsity girls are looking to get on track in Mother Lode League play, going just 1-4 so far. They entered the week at 4-11 overall.

Riverbank’s JV girls also took a pair of losses to Linden, falling 16-0 on the home field on March 31, then losing 23-3 on the road on April 2.

This week, the girls were scheduled to host Bret Harte on Tuesday, April 7 and travel to Bret Harte for Friday, April 10 action.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Still looking for a victory on the court, the varsity volleyball boys stood at 0-5 in league and 0-10 overall to start this week. They are scheduled to be at Orestimba for a game on Monday, April 13; the Warriors come in with a 4-15 overall mark.

Then it will be a pair of home games for the Bruin volleyball boys to close out the campaign, as the team will host Big Valley Christian on April 20 and Ripon on April 22.
