Low scores at the Escalon Golf Course, fast times at Woodward Reservoir, tough digs in Ripon and a goal fiesta at Modesto Christian High led Riverbank's efforts in prep competition this past week. Following are recaps from the various contests.

Golf

Riverbank challenged the Valley Foothill League's undefeated frontrunner, Escalon (12-0 overall, 9-0 VFL), in a 153-174 Cougar win at the Escalon Golf Course on Wednesday.

Competing without No. 2 Carlye Avey, the Bruins saw Escalon's Presli Pilati snag a medalist-low 35 on the nine-hole course.

Courtney Floyd paced the Bruins with a 39, while Gabby Macedo shot a 42. Amanda Lopez carded a 43 while Aimee Lopez chipped in a 50.

Riverbank (3-7) takes on host Linden on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Volleyball

Riverbank fought through a 3-0 loss to undefeated Ripon (5-0 Trans-Valley League) after 13-25, 12-25, 12-25 scores on Wednesday.

"The sets were closer than the scores indicate," Riverbank coach Lisa Mila said. "The girls were intimidated at first, but started to play very hard mid-game."

Megan Larson (three assists) had four big blocks at the net to keep Indian hitters off balance. Karly Martinez and Amy McDonald each nabbed 21 digs, while Katie Mitchell and Tempest Robertson sent home two kills each. Kendra Garcia led the way behind the serving stripe with two aces.

"Megan had a few huge blocks to help build our momentum, but in the end Ripon overpowered us," Mila said. "They are a great team, and it's good for us to see that level of competition, it only makes us better."

Riverbank (1-4) is at Modesto Christian (4-1) today at 6:30 p.m.

Soccer

Riverbank followed up a disheartening 3-1 loss to Hughson with an 11-2 blowout of Modesto Christian on Thursday. The Crusaders trailed just 3-2 at the half, but watched eight second half goals create a huge margin of Bruin victory.

Carlos Harvey, Jonathan Solano and Diego Duran netted two goals each, while Ruben Lopez, Kenny Veliz and Hugo Yepez (two assists) scored one apiece. Jose Vigil assisted on a score, and saw goalkeeper Rafael Ramirez make six saves at the net.

Riverbank (3-4 TVL) played a highly anticipated rematch with Escalon (3-2-1) on Tuesday, though results were not available at press time.

The Bruins host Orestimba (3-2-2) on Thursday at 4 p.m.
