With a Labor Day shortened week due to the Monday, Sept. 2 holiday observance, Riverbank High fall sports squads continued with preseason competition, Tuesday through Saturday this past week. There was also some fun on the court mixed in, as staff members jumped into action for a tournament.
Lady Bruin Volleyball
The Riverbank girls hosted Modesto High on Tuesday, Sept. 3, winning the first set, 25-23, but then falling to the Lady Panthers, 22-25, 19-25 and 16-25. They were to host River Islands High School from Lathrop on Sept. 10, then travel to Turlock Christian for a Sept. 12 contest.
Staff Volleyball Tournament
Teachers and staff at Riverbank High entertained their students with a three-game volleyball match after school on Wednesday, Sept. 4, in the Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium.
It was hard to decide which team to root for, with fans on both sides. The ‘visitors’ team was captained by science teacher Jimmy Zepeda, and the ‘home’ team was captained by English teacher and varsity girls basketball coach Janelle Luu.
The visitors won the first and last games, 25-15 and 25-23, with the home team taking the middle game, 25-21, giving the overall match victory to the visitors by a 2-1 final.
Lady Bruin Flag Football
Girls football traveled to Lodi for a tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7, losing to Tokay, 42-6, to Stagg, 26-6, and to Laguna Creek, 26-6.
Coach Jeff Borden reported that his team “played some quality teams and we fell short. I’m proud of the positive attitudes and the way this team is coming together, they love Flag Football and are determined to improve.”
The girls were scheduled to travel to Ripon for a Sept. 11 contest.
Co-Ed Cross Country
Riverbank cross country runners will soon be back in action, as they are slated to compete at the Kim Duyst Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Boys football is coming off a preseason bye. They’re scheduled to travel to Florin High for a non-league game this week.
The RHS golf girls are scheduled to host Summerville High from Tuolumne County at the Escalon Golf Course on Sept. 12.
