Bruin Tennis Team Takes First League Match

Posting a win for their first Trans Valley League match, Bruin tennis players defeated Ripon Christian by 5-2 in a home meet Friday.

They also took on Waterford away Tuesday and at home Thursday, winning easily against a much weaker team.

"Ripon Christian brought back everyone except their number one girl and played good tennis," said Riverbank coach Bruce Edwards. "Every match was a good one, and the outcome could have been 4-3 but we made it 5-2," he added.

The match got off to a good start when Javier Contreras defeated James Viant, 6-2, 6-1 in boys number one singles. Katy Hughes struggled to retain concentration and lost her match 3-6, 3-6 to Betty Kootstra.

Matt Santin took control from the start, showed good composure and concentration to win 6-3, 6-2.

Rachel Soto, playing Riverbank's number two girls singles spot, fought hard for her win. She fell behind in the first set, 3-0, and finally lost it, 4-6, In the second set she triumphed, 6-1, when her opponent appeared to tire, In the last set, she fell to a 4-4 tie but struggled on to win that, 6-4.

Girls doubles was a walkover for RC who took control from the start, posting a 6-1, 6-3 win.

"They hit harder and they were more accurate," said Edwards.

Nathan Lyday and Tyler Burnett, playing boys doubles, relentlessly pushed the ball back over the net again and again against Chad Van Houten and Shawn Prewitt, taking the win 6-0, 6-1.

Girls doubles players Amber Nichols and Vivian Fernandez also took their match 6-1, 6-3. So did the Bruin mixed doubles pair Cecilia Gutierrez and Jason Jarvis by 6-2, 6-2.
