Bruins End Season In Playoffs

If there was any doubt Riverbank High belonged in the NorCal bracket of the 2012 California Interscholastic Federation boys basketball playoffs, it was addressed on March 7.

The 11th seeded Bruins led host No. 6 seed St. Patrick/St. Vincent for most of the first round contest, ultimately falling in the final seconds after St. Patrick/St. Vincent drained a game-wining basket with only 1.7 seconds to play.

"The guys were more sad the season was over than that they lost the game," Riverbank coach Jeff Jennings said. "Their starting point guard was taller than our starting center, but despite their size we didn't back down from the challenge and we went right after them."

Riverbank led 22-17 at the half and 37-31 after three quarters, but couldn't keep pace with a 19-point fourth quarter from St. Patrick/St. Vincent.

Rolaun Dunham led Riverbank with 14 points in the loss while Alex Reynaga drained four treys to finish with 12 points. Antony Navarrette added nine points while Kenny Veliz scored seven. Logan Nabors and Markus Benson scored three points each.

The loss ended a 23-5 season for a Riverbank team that was only defeated by section champions and section runner-ups.

"It's nice to know that hard work pays off, because these kids worked exceptionally hard throughout the season," Jennings said. "It's a good lesson that when you work hard and commit to something that good things will happen, both in basketball or in the classroom."
