Riverbank High girls won their final varsity softball game of the RHS Tourney 3-1 against Waterford after losing four prior games.
"It was a great game. The girls were hitting well and looking more confident in the last game of the day," said Bruin coach Sam Graham.
They came into the tournament with very little practice because at RHS they had no batting cage and their field remained unusable after heavy rain, the coach noted.
Megan Medrano handled the pitching against Waterford, while Courtney Brock went 3-for-3 at bat with two singles and a double. Medrano was 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI and Barbara Carreno, a senior playing her first year of softball, hit a single and drove in a run.
Riverbank scored two runs in the third inning and one more in the fifth while Waterford managed to score one run in the last inning.
Escalon was the champion of the nine-team varsity tourney, followed by Patterson in second place and Calaveras in third.
Starting with two games Friday at Rainbow Fields, the Lady Bruins lost 4-0 to Bret Harte and 6-0 to LeGrand. They again were blanked 4-0 by Argonaut on Saturday but then scored some runs in a second round contest against LeGrand, falling just short in a 5-3 loss
Against Bret Harte, Medrano led the pitching with Tessa Lozano as catcher and also rapped out two singles in three visits to the plate. Bret Harte scored one run in the second inning, two in the third and another in the fifth.
Jamie Davidson took over the pitching for Riverbank against LeGrand, which posted two runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third and one in the fifth. Ashley Reed had the only hit for the Bruins.
Facing Argonaut on Saturday, the Bruins showed some improvement in hitting. Courtney Brock, Stephanie Tapia and Courtney Vizcaino each hit a single. Medrano again did the pitching.
Taking on LeGrand again the Bruins communicated better, moved better and improved their base running, said Graham.
"We had five hits, scored three runs and had no errors, definitely an improvement," he said.
Chelsea Walls went 2-for-2 with two singles and an RBI, Medrano was 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI and Tapia hit two singles in three attempts. Walls did the pitching.
In the junior varsity, nine-team tournament, the Bruins played four games and lost them all.
