The only thing that went wrong for the Riverbank High varsity basketball team's Homecoming contest against the Ripon Christian Knights is the Bruins ran out of time in a 55-50 loss to the Knights on Friday, Feb. 6.

Riverbank came into its contest with the Knights nursing a tough six-point 64-58 loss to the Hughson Huskies, fueling a solid first half in which the Bruins outscored the Knights 24-14 over the first two periods of action. A lackadaisical return from the halftime intermission, however, spelled doom for the Bruins on their Homecoming night.

It only took one period for the Knights to put themselves in position to steal the two teams' final meeting, outscoring the Bruins 16-7 in the pivotal third period. Riverbank fought back valiantly, but the scoreboard clock did not hold up its end of the comeback.

Riverbank's offensive production cannot be held responsible for the pair of league losses, erupting for 18 3-pointers in the two contests. The Bruins know that their insufficient play on the defensive end is what led to the squad's two single-digit losses.

Zack Gonzales continued to light up Trans-Valley League competition, notching 17 points while connecting on five 3-pointers in the Bruins' loss to Ripon Christian. Gonzales was nothing short of magnificent in the squad's loss to Hughson, torching the Huskies for 25 points while nailing six 3-pointers.

Eric Page knocked down three 3-pointers against Ripon Christian to make up his nine-point evening and added another trey in the Bruins' loss to Hughson.

The Bruins got offensive contributions from all over the floor, but each time the squad needed a defensive stop, the play never appeared.

Jose Moreno provided a strong presence for the Bruins in the middle, combining for 16 points in the two losses. Donovan Wallace continued to show improvements on the court, chipping in eight points for Homecoming and reaching double digits with 10 points against Hughson.

The Bruins will have to close out the Trans-Valley League schedule with an inspired effort if the squad plans on grabbing any more victories to build on for next season.

Riverbank will get another match up with the Escalon Cougars as the Bruins make the short drive to Escalon on Friday, Feb. 13. Riverbank will then travel to Salida to meet up with the Modesto Christian Crusaders on Feb. 17.

Both contests are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs.
