Bruins Takes League Tennis Titles

Bruin tennis players Justin Jarvis and Amber Nickles won the TVL championship in mixed doubles on Friday.

Javier Contreras and Jarvis won the boys doubles league title on Sunday and advanced to the section tournament taking place today in Stockton.

Katy Hughes played for the girls singles league title on Monday afternoon in Riverbank. Results will be listed in the May 19 issue.

.Jarvis and Nickles defeated Dorrity and Katz of Ripon 6-0, 6-0 in the first round; Groenaward and Kirk, of Ripon Christian, 6-0, 6-0, in the semi finals; and McNulty and London, of Hughson, 6-3, 6-0, in the finals.

"Justin is a heck of a doubles player. He moves everywhere and he's fast," said his coach Bruce Edwards.

Contreras, he added, was declared the tournament's most valuable player.

"It's decided by all the coaches. They vote on the guy they would most like to have on their team," said Edwards. "Javier is not only a solid and talented player, but shows great sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the game."

Bypassing the first round, Hughes defeated Vanderschaaf 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals, and Rushing 6-1, 7-6 (7), in the semi finals to face Bethany Kootstra, of Ripon Christian, in Monday's finals.

Contreras and Jarvis won 6-3. 6-0, in the quarter finals, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, in the semi finals and 6-1, 7-6 (2), in the championship.

The sections today will conclude the season. Riverbank placed fourth in league and garnered a 7-5 record.

Jarvis, Contreras and Hughes have been named All League.

Ripon Christian finished top of the league with Livingston and Escalon tied for second place.
