Cold Start Spoils Chances for JV Boys

The Bruins started cold in the junior varsity boys game against Ripon, although they gathered more points later.

That's the reverse of their usual pattern of beginning well enough and hitting a third quarter slump. But it didn't help. Riverbank lost the Tuesday game anyway, 67-55 .

The Bruins began by scoring just six points in the first quarter to their opponents' 14, and during the second period was tied, 17-17. In the third quarter, Riverbank managed a respectable 13 points, but Ripon moved ahead to 24. And in the last period, the Bruins started coming back with 19 points to Ripon's 12.

"We played good defense and shot pretty well but made some mental mistakes. And Ripon is a good team and took advantage of them," said Bruin coach Derrick Burnett.

High point scorer for Riverbank was Ray Baca, with 20 points. Alex Munoz notched up 10 points.

Facing another powerful opponent in the form of Patterson on Friday, Riverbank lost that game by 61-33.

The Bruins was the low scorer in every quarter except the last. They were down 39-17 by halftime, and scored only six points to their opponent's 14 in the third quarter.

Munoz was high point man with 10 points.

"We didn't make the adjustments that were needed. We didn't shoot or rebound well. Patterson, along with Escalon, is one of the top teams in the league," said Burnett.
