COVID Concerns Cancel More Games For Riverbank High

Another edition of Friday Night Lights evaded the Riverbank High Bruin football team this past week, and the night before, Lady Bruin volleyball teams had to settle for a practice session instead of pre-league matches scheduled against Orestimba High School from Newman.

Notice of the Sept. 3 football cancellation was sent out by the RHS Athletic Director last Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 1 with no specific reason noted, but Delta High School is in Clarksburg, in Sacramento County, where COVID cases are on the rise.

Lady Bruin volleyball coach John Bartlett noted of the Thursday cancellation that several players from his team were disqualified because of COVID quarantine requirements, and the Orestimba team reported to him the same problem with some of its players.

It’s unknown if this week’s sports schedule will hold up, for similar reasons, but RHS football is scheduled to host a 7 p.m. game against Argonaut High’s Mustangs from Jackson in a pre-league game on Sept. 10. The Bruins have a bye on Friday, Sept. 17, and their Trans-Valley League play is set to start on Sept. 24, with a home game against the Modesto Christian Crusaders.

Girls volleyball was set to travel to Ripon to face the Indians on Tuesday, Sept. 7 after press deadline.

Lady Bruin golf, likewise, was to host Denair’s Lady Coyotes at the Escalon Golf Course on Tuesday, and cross country is scheduled for a Saturday meet, the Kim Duyst Invitational, in Ceres on Sept. 11.
