Day Camps, Other Activities Offered By City Rec Department

Riverbank Recreation Department is offering a variety of sports day camps and other activities for the summer.

For signups or more information on the programs, call 869-7124 or visit the department office at 6707 Third Street in downtown Riverbank. The camps cannot happen unless there are enough signups in advance. Immediate registration is advised for interested parents and their children.

Sports Sampler

A camp offering a different sport each day of the week is slated to run from June 28 through July 2.

Housed at Cardozo Gymnasium and the Community Pool, the camp will have basketball on Monday, softball on Tuesday, soccer on Wednesday, field hockey on Thursday and swimming on Friday

Intended for ages 6 through 12, the camp will run each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a fee of $50. Bring a sack lunch and snacks. The fee includes a camp T-shirt.

More Ballgames

Given sufficient sign-ups, there will also be camps in volleyball, basketball and soccer on tap during July and August.

The department plans to conduct a volleyball camp July 6-9 at Cardozo Gymnasium. It will run from 9 a.m. to noon only, for ages 10-14, for a fee of $40.

Skyhawks instructors are planning a basketball camp for beginning and intermediate players between July 26-30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be for ages 7 through 14, take place at the Cardozo Gymnasium, and will cost $89.

The Skyhawks also hope to put on a soccer skills camp from Aug. 2 to Aug. 6 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Castleberg Park. The planned age group is 7 through 17 years. The fee is also set at $89.

For Younger Kids

Children ages 4 and 5 are offered a camp in soccer, basketball and baseball to run July 12-16 from 9 a.m. to noon at Castleberg Park.

The fee will be $79. Parents are asked to bring sunscreen, snacks and water, and to dress their children in tennis shoes and appropriate clothing.

Modesto A's Night

Riverbank residents are reminded that June 26 will be Riverbank Night at the Modesto A's. Tickets, at $6 each, are available from the city recreation office.

Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. for the game start at 7 p.m. on John Thurman Field. During a night honoring Riverbank, and complete with fireworks after the game, the Modesto As will take on the Visalia Oaks.

Young At Heart

A low impact exercise class designed to help older adults live longer, healthier and more independent lives continues at the Riverbank Community Center on each Tuesday and Friday.

The times are 9- to 10:30 a.m. Just drop in. The fee is $1. Pay the instructor. The class uses an exercise tube and resistance training. Members follow the indoor program with a power walk around the park.

Adventure Camp

Signups for an outdoor adventure camp at Jacob Myers Park, June 14-18, are due at the Riverbank Recreation Department.

The camp will offer exploring, hiking, arts and crafts, water games and relays for a week of outdoor fun.

In session from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., it is intended for children ages 6 to 12. The fee will be $70. Another session is slated for June 21 to June 25.

Pool Open Daily

The Riverbank Community Pool is now open every day. Hours are from 12:30- to 4 p.m. on weekdays and from noon until 4 p.m. on weekends.

Cost for recreational swimming is $1 for those under 18, and $2 for adults.

All swimmers must wear swimsuits. No street clothes, shorts, cut-offs, etc. are allowed.

Food In The Park

The summer food program in the park is running each lunchtime on weekdays through Aug. 6.

Meals are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and served by the Riverbank Recreation Department staff. They are provided in the park gazeboes at Community Center and Castleberg parks.

The meals are free of charge for ages through 18. Meals must be consumed on site.

Times are from noon to 12:40 p.m. in the Community Center Park at 3600 Santa Fe Street, and from 12:10 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. in the Castleberg Park at Eighth Street and Kentucky Avenue.
