As the winter break for Riverbank High School athletes wound down, the Lady Bruin soccer teams were treated to a rare daytime soccer match, hosting Sonora, with the JV at noon and varsity at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3.

The varsity Lady Bruins bench was somewhat depleted last week, with several players still out of town for the holidays, but they held up well against a continuing onslaught from the Lady Wildcat visitors from Sonora. Riverbank fought off more than 20 shots on goal through most of the game, giving up just one score in the middle of the second period, but it turned out to be just enough for the 1-0 win recorded by the visitors.

Trans-Valley League play was to start this week, with Riverbank hosting Livingston on Tuesday, Jan. 7 after The News went to press, then again Thursday, Jan. 9 when they travel to Hughson.

It appears as if the boys team’s schedules are just the opposite of the girls this week in soccer. They were scheduled to travel to Livingston on Tuesday and will host the Huskies from Hughson in a Thursday, Jan. 9 contest to start their first week of league matches.

Bruin Basketball

Boys basketball traveled to Linden last Friday, Jan. 3, but no official score had been reported as of press time. And the players then had to get up Saturday morning, Jan. 4, to staff the RHS Youth Basketball Clinic that Riverbank basketball squads were hosting.

Trans-Valley League play for the hoop boys is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Hilmar, then Escalon’s Cougars visit Riverbank on Friday, Jan. 10. Freshman games are at 4 p.m., with JV games scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game tipping off about 7 p.m.
