Fifth Straight - Lady Bruins On A Roll

Varsity girls basketball teams scattered across all divisions of enrollment have faltered in the wake of Riverbank High for nearly a month.

The Lady Bruins have won five straight games since a loss to Sonora on Dec. 11, and added Turlock and Orestimba to their résumé by stunning both programs on back to back days on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3.

Riverbank eased past Division I Turlock 53-42 in their final glimpse of the preseason after a 19-point effort from Olivia Luu. Janelle Luu added 15 points while Vanessa Vargas (five), Chloe Arnold (four), Kendra Garcia (four), Tori Sandoval (three), Raine Gallagher (two) and Toni Adams (two) all contributed.

The varsity girls extended their overall record to 11-3 and opened Trans-Valley League play with a win by easily besting Orestimba a day later. The Lady Bruins outscored Orestimba 18-2 in the final period to erase the memory of Orestimba's 12-10 rally in the third quarter.

Janelle Luu had 23 points with 11 rebounds in the victory while Olivia Luu chipped in 18 points and eight steals. Garcia (six), Vargas (six), Amy McDonald (two) and Adams (two) also scored for Riverbank.

"The girls have been steadily improving and still seem that they haven't reached their full potential," Riverbank coach Tim Carnes said. "(Our) first league game against Orestimba was a game that gave us an opportunity to put new player combinations out on the floor."

Carnes said the rotations allowed him to witness success from Vargas at point guard while Gallagher played tough in her first start, Janelle Luu dominated the paint, Olivia Luu put on a ball-handling clinic, Sandoval proved tough defensively and Garcia nabbed critical rebounds.

The Bruins were at Escalon on Monday, though results were not available at press time. The team is at Hilmar on Thursday, Jan. 10.
