As the last hours and minutes ticked by of the 2023-2024 school year this past week, a few Riverbank High School athletes got in a few more events before fading away to the summer.

State Track & Field Championships

Riverbank distance runner Giselle Fernandez went to the State Track and Field Meet over the holiday weekend, the 104th edition of the CIF event. She competed in the 1600-meter race. It was held in Veteran’s Stadium at Buchanan High School in Fresno.

Although she set another personal record last Friday, she placed 19th, and did not make it to the finals. Her new PR is 4:59.52, just under the five-minute mark.

RHS girls players and their coaches put a bow on the 2024 season with a small dinner gathering at the school cafeteria on Wednesday evening last week.

Coach Jeff Borden thanked the six or so JV players who moved up the week before to help out as they played the first game of the Section tournament, on the same day as many players were on the Senior Disneyland Trip.

The coach thanked his players for their hard work this season, and had a special mention for two of his players.

Both centerfielder Sophia DeMatteo and shortstop/pitcher Mahaila Guzman had indicated their interest in continuing to play ball, and Borden was able to connect them with the softball program at Modesto Junior College.

He surprised them with team T-shirts, and game shirts, from the Lady Pirates’ coach at MJC.
