This past week, Bruin football was again on the road, for their second game of the season. Again, they brought home a victory, this time, over Delta High School of Clarksburg.
As varsity coach Kit Jory said, “It was a hard fought, very defensive game. While both offenses managed to move the ball, both defenses were stingy in the red zone.”
The Bruins attempted a 38-yard field goal but it fell short and the first quarter ended 0-0.
“Our defense held Delta out of the end zone, defending from the first and goal situation down to the fourth down where they finally struck first,” Jory added, ending the half with a 22-yard field goal, with the score 3-0 in favor of Delta.
After some crucial halftime adjustments, both on offense and defense, the Bruins started to click.
“We managed to sustain a solid drive to start the third quarter. Bryce Martin took a quarterback sneak up the middle for the first TD of the day,” Jory said.
The extra point attempt was kicked through the uprights by Igor Ventreschi.
“Leading 7-3 going into the fourth quarter, the coaches knew we were going to need a big stop to seal the win,” Jory said. “It came when Delta attempted to convert a crucial fourth and six at midfield with a swing pass and our defense flocked to the ball to produce a four-yard tackle for a loss.”
From there, the Bruin varsity was able to methodically chew up the clock on every down as they drove down the field.
A designed QB run to the house by Martin resulted in a 20-yard scoring strike with just over a minute to go in the game, Ventreschi again adding the point after.
“Our defense managed one more defensive stand to get the ball back to our starting O. This allowed us to take a few quick knees in victory formation to seal the win, 14-3,” Jory concluded.
The Bruins next play at home on Friday, Aug. 31, welcoming the Rite of Passage team from San Andreas. Game times are 5:30 p.m. for the JV team and 7:30 p.m. for varsity.
Girls Volleyball
The girls of Riverbank High varsity volleyball kicked out the cobwebs with their first competition of the 2018 season on Monday, Aug. 20, with the annual Foundation Game. They welcomed the Lady Vikings from Johansen High School in Modesto.
The Foundation Games are Section-wide volleyball matches that are played to raise money for Sac-Joaquin Section scholarships awarded at the end of the school year. They don’t count in the standings.
The Lady Bruins lost the match to JHS, in three games — 25-22, 25-16, and 25-20.
On Tuesday, Aug. 21, they played Argonaut, but no scores were reported. The next day, they played at Downey, losing 3-0 to the Lady Knights — 25-12, 25-21, and 26-24.
This week, they were scheduled to be pretty busy, with three straight home matches. They were to play Gustine on Monday, Grace Davis of Modesto on Tuesday and were scheduled to host Ceres on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
They next match also will be at home, on Tuesday, Sept. 4 against Modesto Christian, to begin the Trans-Valley League season.
Girls Golf
The Lady Bruins were scheduled to play at Ripon Christian on Tuesday, Aug. 21, but no results have been reported.
This week, the team was to host Livingston on Tuesday and was to travel to Tracy for a match on Aug. 29.
