No, it wasn’t an April Fools trick, there really was a Riverbank High football game last Thursday, April 1.

Originally scheduled for Friday, like most high school games, the contest was moved to a day earlier, with no word on exactly why. There was speculation that it was to avoid playing on what would have been the first day of spring break, Friday, April 2 – which this year was also Good Friday, the start of Easter weekend.

The Bruins next scheduled game is planned for this Friday, April 9. That’s the last day of the school’s spring break period. The football team is slated to play in Waterford.

Next week, the final home game of the 2021 winter football season is scheduled for the Bruins to travel to Hughson.

In last week’s pigskin action, Riverbank hosted the Denair Coyotes, but had trouble stringing together a consistent series of plays that could bring them close to the end zone.

Denair was first on the board, with a touchdown, but missed the extra point. The Bruins turned right around and capitalized on their next possession, but also missed the PAT, with the scoreboard at 6-6.

By the end of the quarter, the Coyotes had scored again, so it ended 14-6, on a two-point conversion.

The game’s bright spots on the field for Riverbank included a scattering of lengthy completed passes, and a couple of solid runs, but nothing more crossed into the end zone after the first quarter, so the game ended at a 46-6 deficit for the host Bruin team.

Lady Bruin Volleyball

Riverbank girls volleyball saw Mariposa County’s Lady Grizzlies visit on Monday, leaving with a 3-0 match victory. RHS battled throughout the course of the afternoon, but ultimately fell in straight sets, 15-25, 14-25, 20-25.

This week, the Lady Bruins were to host Denair on Tuesday, April 6, and Hughson’s Lady Huskies are to visit on Thursday, April 8.

RHS Softball

Lady Bruin softball is scheduled for a game on the road April 7 at Denair, but won’t play again until April 13, at home, against Hughson.

Spring Sports

The final season of sports for this school year is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks, with basketball, track and field, baseball, and soccer.

Basketball, both boys and girls, is set to begin on Wednesday, May 5. Soccer, boys and girls, are set to start the day before, May 4. Track and field dates haven’t been set yet. Baseball starts on the road on April 27 and continues in to early June.
