Fundamentals Are Seen As Key To Successful Baseball Season

The Riverbank High School baseball team looks to return to their past glory during 2004. The Bruins have not enjoyed a lot of recent success, but head coach Mike Carrigg and assistant coach Derrick Burnett look to bring the team back to the top of the Trans Valley League.

In 2003, the team fell in the middle of the pack, but this year the Bruins should improve and may even find themselves competing for the top spot in the league.

On the field, the Bruins are led by 2003 Offensive All League second baseman Adan Mercado and 2003 Defensive All League selection Andrew Villalobos. who both pitches and catches.

Other notable returning players include shortstop Juan Lopez, third baseman Chris Bigelow and center fielder Cody Avey.

If the Bruins are going to place toward the top of the TVL standings, they are going to have to execute the bunts, steals and hit and runs which fit the style of small ball they are going to have to play.

This is not a team that is going to win a lot of high scoring games. Instead, the Bruins need to avoid mental mistakes and the errors that can kill team morale.

Fans can once again be excited about Bruin baseball. The guys have been working hard to improve. Hopefully, their hard work will result in them competing for a playoff spot

The Bruins began their season on March 2 in a game at Sonora.
