Galvan Scores Hat Trick To Tie Soccer Match

Bruin soccer player Erica Galvan scored three goals against Ripon Christian to give Riverbank High School its first tie in a March 31 game.

"We're scoring more goals. We already have more now than in the entire season last year," said Bruin coach Jim Anderson.

Riverbank nailed the net first in that game. RC came back with a goal of its own, then Galvan scored again off an assist from Courtney Nelson.

RC scored "right off the bat" in the second half, then took a 3-2 lead before Galvan got her third goal. She volleyed the ball in mid air off a cross shot from Sonia Silvera.

Jackie Perez played good defense in filling in for fullback Rebecca Jiminez, who was injured and won't be back until after the Easter vacation.

Facing Ripon on April 1, the Bruins came out flat, were trailing by 8-0 at halftime, and then lost, 10-0, in the end. The bright spot was a spirited play by sophomore Liz Medina-Meza.

Riverbank did not do any better, in terms of goals, against Hilmar on April 6, losing that match by 11-1.

The Bruins did shake up Hilmar at the start, however, when they pushed downfield and scored within the first minute. Serena Palmer got that goal off a pass from Nelson.

Hilmar is a formidable team and showed great sportmanship in not pushing the score higher, said Anderson.

Riverbank lost Friday's game against Patterson by 3-1, the Bruins scoring off a penalty kick by Palmer after Patterson drew ahead, 3-0, by halftime.

First year player Alex Benitez, at left forward, showed some talented moves as did Palmer and Medina-Meza, said Anderson.

The Bruins took the field without one of their top players, Silvera, who had to miss the game due to a family crisis.

Riverbank is taking a break for Easter this week. The next game is slated to be at home against Hughson on April 21.
