Riverbank girls hardly broke a sweat in winning the Sac Joaquin Sub-Sections in cross-country to advance to this weekend's finals in Folsom.

Running at Angels Camp on Saturday, Nov. 6, the Riverbank team had 30.2 points; Bret Harte, 52; Escalon, 69; Colfax, 103; Summerville, 143; Waterford, 148; Hughson, 155; and Lincoln, 204.

"That was without Riverbank's lead runner Maritza Garcia. She has an ankle injury and was resting in preparation for the finals, Bruin coach Jeep Oliveira said.

Escalon's champion, Amanda Moreno, inevitably won the Division IV race in 18:59, followed by Bret Harte's Brooke Lawrence, in 19:29.

Then came the Bruins, placing third, fourth and fifth. Bianca Melchor, 19:39; Gina Arnold, 19:57; and Brettany Harrison, 20:15.

Among other Bruins, Angelica Duarte placed sixth in 20:34; Asia Harrison, 12th in 21:20; and Tiffany Lackey, 16th in 21:50.

The top eight teams go on," said Oliveira. "The real race is this Saturday's Sections at Folsom High. From there the top three teams go to the State Meet."

Riverbank's small team of boys, competing without their coach because Bruce Edwards injured his leg, ran in the frosh-soph race.

Riverbank's Omar Fernandez won the two-mile event in 11:54, and he was trailed by teammate Isaac Montoya, in second place with 12:08.

Among the other Riverbank runners, Justin Smith placed fifth in 12:55; Josh Alpers, ninth in 14:04; and Tanner Nabors, 14th in 15:30.

Two other members of the seven-boy team did not compete because they are injured.
