The return to classes after the winter break has been a good one for RHS varsity basketball teams, at least on the home hardwood. The teams kicked off the Trans-Valley League campaign and have already put a league win on the books.

Lady Bruin Basketball

Girls basketball got underway, at home, with a solid win this week against the Lady Yellowjackets of Hilmar, on Tuesday, Jan. 7. The home team outscored the visitors in three of the four frames, finishing on top, 50-44.

They didn’t have the same luck on Thursday, on the road at Escalon, losing a close one, 58-55. However, down by double digits early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bruins battled back to get it to a one-possession game late in the frame. Time ran out before they could get the game tied up, and they ended up going 1-1 for the week.

The girls were to play in Ripon on Tuesday, Jan. 14 and host Hughson in Thursday night action, Jan. 16.

Bruin Boys Basketball

Also last week, the varsity boys basketball team split a pair of games to start off their TVL campaign.

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Bruins traveled to Hilmar, chalking up a 61-56 loss to the host Yellowjackets.

On Friday, they returned home and clawed their way to a 52-49 win over rival Escalon, on the shoulders of clinching bucket with only 15 seconds left on the clock. The Cougars had been leading the game all the way through to the middle of the fourth quarter. The Bruins were down by seven points at the half and by 11 at the end of the third frame but forced some turnovers and took advantage of Escalon miscues to nail down the win.

The JV team posted a 57-56 point win earlier Friday night while the freshmen took a loss to the visiting Cougars.

The Bruins are scheduled to host Ripon on Wednesday, Jan. 15 and travel to Hughson on Friday, Jan. 17.

Bruin Soccer

The varsity boys soccer team hosted Hughson’s Huskies on Thursday, Jan. 9, and although they were tied 1-1 at the midway point of the contest, they came on strong in the second half finishing on top, 4-2, by the end of the match.

They’re scheduled to play in Ripon on Wednesday, Jan. 15 and at Modesto Christian on Friday. Their next home match is set for Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Lady Bruin Soccer

Riverbank’s varsity soccer girls were shut out at home by the visiting Lady Wolves of Livingston on Tuesday, Jan. 7. They were scheduled to play at Hughson on Thursday, but no score had been reported as of press time.

The Lady Bruins are next scheduled to host Modesto Christian on Friday, Jan. 17.
