Keeping a tight hold on second place in the Trans-Valley League standings, the Riverbank varsity Lady Bruins cruised to a pair of victories this week.

They were 20-point winners over Escalon and tripped up Orestimba by 35 points.

The girls started the week at home, hosting Orestimba on Jan. 27 and coming away with a 58-23 decision.

It was a 12-3 lead for Riverbank after one quarter and they outscored the Warriors 11-6 in the second, taking a 23-9 lead at the half. Firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, the girls put the game out of reach with a 21-6 run and cruised to the finish with a 14-8 scoring edge over the final eight minutes for the lopsided win.

Then they headed out on the road for a Thursday night game at Escalon.

It was a cautious opening two minutes, but the Riverbank Lady Bruins took a 5-1 lead and never looked back in the varsity girls basketball game in Escalon on Jan. 30. RHS beat the host Lady Cougars 48-28.

High scorer for Riverbank was senior Janelle Luu at 15 points, followed by sister Olivia Luu, a junior, who had 14. Sophomore Sierra Nabors and senior Kendra Garcia were next with six points each, junior Lilly Garcia chipped in with four, senior Toni Adams had two and junior Daisy Nunez added one point on the night.

The JV girls lost a 28-20 contest to Escalon, while the freshmen fell in a hard fought 32-29 game.

Riverbank was to travel to Hilmar on Monday, Feb. 3 after The News went to press, and will host Ripon on Thursday, Feb. 6.
