Fall Sports Gear Up For Season Ahead

With schools back in session, the fall sports season is on the minds of many of the student athletes in the area.

Riverbank High School cheerleaders are practicing, as well as participants in varsity and JV girls volleyball, boys soccer and football. Cross country and girls golf teams are also on their respective venues, working out.

Volleyball players will first see interscholastic action with a scrimmage at Grace Davis High School at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27 with another scrimmage hosting Johansen High on Thursday, Aug. 28. The district lists Lina Quintinar as coach for both the JV and varsity squads.

For varsity soccer, the boys and coach Martin Gonzales travel to the Pitman Tournament for four matches, two on Friday, Aug. 29 (Atwater 3:50 p.m. and Galt 6:30 p.m.) and two on Saturday, Aug. 30 (Livingston 9 a.m., Lincoln 1 p.m.). JV soccer also heads to the Pitman Tournament with coach Andy Zamora, with games at 2:30 p.m. vs. Galt on Aug. 29 and 5:30 p.m. against Livingston, with a Saturday 10:20 a.m. game against Atwater on Aug. 30.

Girl golfers host their first match on Tuesday, Aug. 26, meeting Orestimba at the Escalon Golf Course, Riverbank’s home field. On Thursday, Aug. 28, they travel to face Bret Harte at Greenhorn Creek. Head Coach is Ismael Mercado.

Both football teams travel to Waterford for their first contest, on Frida, Aug. 29. The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m., the varsity at 7:30 p.m., with Jim Oliver returning to lead the varsity as head coach and Mike Foster the head coach for the JV Bruins. Riverbank’s first home football game is on Friday, Sept. 5, against Denair. Trans-Valley League play starts at home, hosting Modesto Christian for Homecoming on Friday, Oct. 10.

Cross country runners start with the Lodi Flame Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29 at Lodi Lake. The first Trans-Valley-League meet is on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Tuolumne Park in Modesto. Head coaches are Monte Wood and Robbie Searway; Athletic Director is John Bartlett.
