If it seemed like Escalon week in Riverbank sports, the Bruins’ neighbors to the north started and ended it by defeating the Bruins, in volleyball and football, respectively. There were other opponents in between, but the week began and ended with the Cougars coming to town.

First, in girls volleyball on Monday, Oct. 20, the varsity Lady Cougars swept a three-game varsity match, 25-16, 25-6 and 25-14. In JV action, Riverbank won the middle game, 25-23, but lost the other two 13-25 and 7-15 to go down by a 2-1 margin.

Next, on Tuesday, Ripon arrived on the pitch to take on Bruin soccer. In a tight game, RHS scored early in the first period and held on to win 1-0 against the Indians. The Junior Varsity Bruins did better with their win, taking a 3-1 final against the Ripon JV.

On Wednesday, the varsity Lady Bruins returned to the home volleyball court to host Ripon as well, and lost in three straight games, 9-25, 18-25 and 11-15. The JV fared no better, posting a league loss as well.

On Friday, Oct. 24, Escalon returned to Riverbank with a vengeance, this time on the football field. The Cougars came away with a 55-12 varsity win, with Riverbank recording one touchdown in the second quarter and one in the fourth. Both point after attempts were denied. The Bruins continued to give a solid effort but were outmanned by the visiting Cougars, who had plenty of reserves on the sidelines and substituted freely as the game wore on. Because of the point differential at halftime, a running clock was utilized in the second half.

In earlier action on Friday, the host JV Bruins lost out, falling by a final of 42-14. They trailed by two scores at the half, 28-14, but could not get back in the end zone again, while Escalon scored two more times over the final two quarters to take the win.

This week, the Lady Bruins were to travel to Modesto Christian for volleyball on Monday, Oct. 27, and to Hughson on Wednesday (today). They end their season with final matches hosting Hilmar on Nov. 3.

The soccer teams were scheduled to play at Hughson on Tuesday, Oct 28, and host Hilmar for their final games of the season on Oct. 30.

The football Bruins will travel to Hughson to take on the Huskies on Halloween, Oct. 31, then host the Hilmar Yellowjackets for the final games on Friday, Nov. 7.

The girls golf team season ended on the road with the Division V Sections at Micke Grove Golf Links on Monday, Oct. 27.

The Cross Country Bruins are scheduled to participate in the Trans-Valley League Championships today, Oct. 29, at Tuolumne Park in Modesto, with sub-sections on Nov. 8 and the Section Meet on Nov. 15. The State meet is scheduled for Fresno on Nov. 29.
