Victory — it’s something that has eluded the winless Riverbank High varsity girls soccer team for over two months, but Lady Bruin players and coaches are hoping it finds them on their final attempt to secure it.

The 0-17 Bruins play host to Modesto Christian (2-9-1) today, May 1, in the final game of the 2013 season. The Crusaders have won just one conference game in four years, but it was a 6-5 comeback over Riverbank on March 28.

Modesto Christian sophomore Candice White scored five goals in that contest, and will join freshman sensation Carsyn Hoogendoorn in an attempt to again best the Bruins today.

It’s a game that Riverbank coach Martin Gonzales says his team must win.

“We have not given up,” Gonzales said. “These are a good bunch of girls and we should have won a few games by now, but it didn’t happen and it is heartbreaking.

“I believe our girls will do everything they can to win this last one.”

Riverbank slipped 3-1 to Ripon on April 24, then allowed Hughson a 3-0 victory two days later. The Bruins have been outscored 19-79, but sport four losses of just a one-goal margin.

Coach Gonzales said the girls have played exceptionally well in recent contests and attributes their lack of success in the win column to inexperience. The team only utilizes a few upperclassmen on a starting lineup laden with freshmen and sophomores.

“If we don’t win Wednesday, I will be very surprised,” Gonzales said. “We are very hungry for a win and I know a win will do wonders for next year.”
