Varsity Lady Bruins Post Hoops Win Against Oakdale

The girls from nearby Oakdale, the Lady Mustang teams, visited Riverbank this past week and the home teams split the contests in non-league action.

Oakdale stopped by on Tuesday, Dec. 16. for girls basketball action in the last week of school running up to the holiday break.

Oakdale’s varsity squad gave up four points to the Lady Bruins in the first couple minutes of the game, and the host Lady Bruins capitalized, leading 14-6 at the end of the quarter. OHS outscored Riverbank 13-11 in the second quarter but the Bruins maintained the lead at the half, 25-19.

The visiting Lady Mustangs outscored RHS in the third quarter, 8-6, but Riverbank held on and took the win off the court with a final score of 48-41. For the Lady Bruins, senior guard and team co-captain Sierra Nabors was named Player of the Game by her coach, Lupe Galindo, with 14 points recorded. Senior Olivia Luu came in second with 13 points.

In the earlier game, the Oakdale JV team was much more successful, ending the first half ahead 50-21. In the third quarter, RHS added 10 more points, but OHS was still on top, 57-31. OHS outscored host Riverbank in the fourth quarter as well, taking the win.

With the Junior Lady Bruins outshot from the outside and outmuscled under the basket, the Oakdale JV girls came out on top, 65-36.

The varsity girls battled a tough Beyer team on Saturday, falling by a close 55-52 decision.

Although school is out for the holiday break, the girls teams were scheduled to travel to Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp to take on the Lady Bullfrogs on Monday, Dec. 23.

Meanwhile, the Riverbank varsity boys were on the road Friday, Dec. 19 at Sonora and took a 63-48 loss there in non-league play. The Bruins were due to play Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 22 and 23 in the Mesa Verde Challenge, past press time for The News, then take a break until hosting East Union on Friday, Jan. 2.

The JV Bruins, meanwhile, are playing this week in the Johansen Tournament and head to Oakdale for tournament games on Dec. 26, 27 and 29. Freshmen are slated to play in the Davis Tournament on Dec. 27, 29 and 30.
